Slings & Things: Content and Comment

CONTENT

Slings & Things was an absolute blast for me to do. I love nothing more than to talk to shooters about shooting, and that’s ultimately the effect of this book. I’m usually talking about guns and cartridges, but S&T is all about the things we need to have and to learn to get the guns and ammo out to the firing line and rack up a target. It’s plenty technical where it needs to be, choosing a spotting scope for example, but mostly it’s a chance to pass around all the tricks, tips, and set-up ideas I could dream up or remember to discuss. I amazed myself after realizing just how much there was to say.

Slings & Things grew to literally double in its size, and I should by now expect that. My original manuscript, which was “finished” this spring, was 35,000 words. Then. Then I got to really detailing and filling in all the blanks. I kept asking myself if there was more to say that anyone should care about. There’s an amazing amount to talk about just on the topics of handstops, or gloves, or pants, and underwear, for crying out loud, for that matter. Rather than keep it all to myself or “use it some other time...” I put it all in here and, well, there you go. That’s my style, and that’s what you all get from me in everything I do -- it’s my best work. If you're not tired of hearing me go on and on about this book, click here and I'll have more to say...

SLINGS THINGS

S&T isn’t only for beginners. Not by any stretch. It’s for all those who want to learn some different insights and pick up an idea or three, or more, to consider on what should get packed to go to the next event. I’m not exactly a beginner mahseff. I’m a High Master and primarily a Service Rifle shooter. I’m also efficient with a dollar (doesn’t that sound better than “cheap”) and a terrible gamesman. That combination requires creativity. It also requires finding out where to spend the first dollar the most wisely, and that comes from my often-stated motivation not to “spend the same dollar twice.” This book is all about finding out where to spend that first dollar once.

Folks who know me and my work know that it’s very unusual for me to dictate and limit recommendations. That’s of little service to many. Nope. S&T is full of slants and perspectives, and every budget is considered. It’s really easy to say to get such and such “best of the best” and you’ll be happy. Right. Of course you will be. What about the man who has a total equipment budget that’s only half the price of a good spotting scope? S&T will help outfit you with the best collection of gear and kit you can get your hands on. Promise. And for those who spend more on spilled booze New Year’s Eve than my rifles cost, you all are well covered too. Every end of the equipment spectrum, and cost, is covered. There’s a two-hundred-fifty dollar handstop in there, and an eight-hundred-dollar coat. Even more important, those looking to move up can find out where the extra money is best spent, and better saved. That could be priceless for many. I’ve always fit myself into that group. I want better but have to be careful about what I spend on. There’s an obscene amount of wasted money backing up my experience over the last 25 years in making those suggestions, and I’d suggest paying close attention! I am most decidedly a fellow to seek out when the question is what would you start with if you had nothing…
